The holidays are fast approaching and with the season come some of the best movies that have entertained us with their comedic twists and romance.
1. While You were Sleeping
This movie is about misunderstandings and the need to love and be loved. Lucy works at the train station with a crush on a commuter whom she sees every time he goes to work. One day Peter falls into the tracks, unconscious, and is saved by Lucy. A series of misunderstandings ensue and she finds herself engage to the comatose Peter but starts to have feelings for his brother.
One thing that has always struck me about this movie is how easily it is to get caught up in a lie or deception and the difficulty of taking it back. Hijinks are to be expected when the misunderstandings escalate.
2. Miracle on 34th Street (1947 and 1994)
Both movies are about Kris Kringle, an old man who believes he is Santa Claus. He is hired when a department store head sees how good he is as Santa Claus. Kris Kringle gets arrested when he accosts a man but is eventually freed when the judge rules that he is the real Santa Claus.
The movie is full of inspiring moments where we feel the love of the season and the hope that children have for Santa Claus.
3. Love Actually
It follows the loves and lives of several couples during the holiday season. What is interesting about the movie is that the couples get a bit mixed up because of their daily lives and their quest for love and to be loved. You might actually want to root for a random couple because you get to connect with their situation.
It offers very realistic views of people and how they function in society. The reality of love and how it is often affected by other emotions also comes to light.
4. When Harry Met Sally
This is about two people who didn’t think they could have a meaningful relationship because they preempted themselves with thoughts about sex ruining friendship. They met time and again until they became close friends. They eventually have sex and initially feel awkward but they soon admit their feelings for each other. It is fun to explore the possibilities of having a friend first and then a lover second. Many people are afraid to start this way but it is actually a good base for a sound relationship.
A fateful meeting between two people lead them to wonder if they are meant for each other. They decide to let fate play its part and if they meet again then they are meant to be. They have several missed opportunities but they eventually meet again.
Fate and the holiday season play a huge role in their meeting and it does the same with their reunion.
6. Four Christmases
When a young couple decide to visit each of their parents who are divorced from each other, hijinks ensue. Despite the overall annoying vibe when stubbornness and spite reign, the holidays bring out the best in the couple.
The very funny interactions among the group bring out the hilarity and lightness that add to the enjoyment of the holiday season.
7. Bridget Jones’ Diary
A plump, young woman in search for love finds it in an unconventional way. She goes through hoops just to find out who the right man is for her.
The movie is funny in a dry and very British way. Zippy conversations abound and it does not lack for visual slapstick comedy as well.
8. The Holiday
The Holiday is about two women who swap houses and find love during the swap. They not only find love but they also have a few realizations about themselves.
This is a heartwarming romantic comedy that helps cement the fact that the holidays are a very good time to find love.
9. The Family Stone
This is about a quirky family and how they deal with life and love. Although not really all about romance, the love that each member of the family feels for each other is inspiring.
10. White Christmas
This is an old classic that involves songs and dacing. A quartet of entertainers find themselves falling in love for one another while they struggle to entertain people. They travel around the country all the while looking out for each other.
This is a funny movie and has an old time charm that sets it apart from the others.
