The San Diego MOMfia Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is the San Diego MOMfia™?

The San Diego MOMfia is a community-based group of bloggers living in the gorgeous and almost always sunny San Diego. We currently have about 25 local bloggers actively contributing and supporting the website. While we do not represent all the fabulous bloggers in San Diego, we wish we did. All local bloggers are welcome to contribute and become a member of the SDMOMfia. We even have some non-mom bloggers here at the MOMfia. Some are future moms, current moms-to-be, and there’s even a few men in the group!

What makes the San Diego MOMfia different than other blogs?

We are a place for all San Diego residents to come together in a shared voice. Most of the contributors have their own blogs where they actively post about parenting, cooking, wine, fashion and anything else that tickles their fancy. However, here on SDMOMfia we come together in our love and support of our great city. We collectively discuss the fabulous things to do  in San Diego with and without your children. The SDMOMfia website gives us a place to share links, stories and opinions, while supporting each other, focusing on building the community at large and bringing awareness to the lovely city of San Diego.

Who are the San Diego MOMfia Mamas?

We believe that it “takes a village” to run a successful website. Especially one emphasizing all the fabulous things to do in this giant city. We would be nothing without our contributors. While there is a core group that drives the back-end of the site and keeps us from forgetting our lunch money and school books, the San Diego MOMfia accepts submissions and support from anyone who wants to be involved.

You can contribute as some do by supporting the MOMfia via Twitter and Facebook. Or, if you love to write, we would love to have you submit your stories of life in San Diego to be featured in our daily rotation. Anyone who wants to to contribute to our supportive online community about their love of all things San Diego, is welcome to join the MOMfia.

How do the MOMfia Mamas support each other?

We support each other in a variety of ways, both on and off line. On line we help to promote each other’s individual blogs by posting excerpts, comments, tweets and Facebook posts all directing traffic back to personal blogs. IRL (In Real Life) we get together for fun Girls’ Night Outs and events hosted by local businesses. Brought together by the internet, we are now some of each other’s best friends offline as well.

I see you guys talking about some cool events, how does that work?

The nice part about forming a supportive community is that local businesses want to do cool things for you. Let’s be honest, for the most part events that bloggers attend usually come from social media savvy PR agencies that know how to properly work with bloggers. Internally, we think of an event as grouped into one of three categories:

  • Invite Only Event: This is an event where the business and/or person that is hosting the event plans the guest list and members of the SDMOMfia may personally be invited. If the individual MOMfia Mama chooses to, you may see them promoting the event before hand or talking about the event during or after.
  • Public Events: A public event is a general event that is open for all, blogger or not, to attend. The San Diego MOMfia may support and promote the event on the website if a MOMfia Mama wants to do a post about it. Examples of these events can be found under the Events tab on our homepage.
  • San Diego MOMfia targeted events: This a private event in which the host and/or organizer has expressed the desire to specifically target members of the MOMfia to invite. Sometimes the organizer has specific MOMfia Mamas targeted and other times its open to first come first serve to the MOMfia Mamas. The San Diego MOMfia “powers that be” will not handpick some members over others.

You mention “the powers that be” – Who actually runs the site?

The San Diego MOMfia stresses that the success of the website is based on the fabulous members of our MOMfia community, without whom the site wouldn’t have the allure, humor, content or pizzazz that SDMOMfia site is quickly becoming known for. But yes, there are a few captains manning the ship and making sure it doesn’t run ashore:

  • Beth Avant (@HipMamaB): Beth has dedicated countless hours to developing professional relationships with the businesses that work closely with San Diego MOMfia. As one of the site’s co-founders, Beth organizes contests and reviews, schedules and coordinates events and is the core link between business owners and PR companies. She continues to create new relationships daily.
  • Theresa Seid: (@RockonMommies): Theresa is the techie around SDMOMfia. Quite literally there would be no www.SDMOMfia.com without her. As co-founder, Theresa has used her expertise of successfully running Rock On Mommies to drive the initiatives and goals of the SD MOMfia.  Theresa is the go-to person for fabulous Vlogs and puts her past experience to the test daily by being the consummate SDMOMfia cheerleader.

While Theresa and Beth may be the ones behind the green curtain of www.sdmomfia.com – content comes from our talented contributors. Collectively, we encourage PR firms to form relationships with these great bloggers on an individual level, as well as connecting with the group as a whole through this website. Please read our DISCLOSURE statement for more information on how we work with PR agencies. Additionally, please note that the thoughts and opinions posted on this blog are unique to the writer of the particular post, not the site as a whole.

The San Diego MOMfia™ is a great name, who came up with that?

The name was a term of endearment used originally by Jason Avant (@Petcobra) when commenting on his wife’s group of online friends. It is pretty catchy, and it stuck!
